Clans
On muds, a player-character, a pc, can band together with
other pcs in an association often termed a clan.
A clan is composed of like-minded individuals in that
they all choose to follow a particular way of life.
For example, a character who is evil will join a clan that is evil
so that he will have the support of other evil characters.
Naturally, such a character would not be accepted by a clan that is holy anyway.
There are advantages and disadvantages to being in a clan and to not being in one.
A character who chooses not to join a clan is sometimes called a loner.
One advantage that a loner has is that he doesn't
have to behave in accordance with a particular clan philosophy.
Another advantage is that a loner can make friends with members
of rival clans, but this can sometimes cause problems too.
The advantage to being in a clan is that you have
easy access to others who share your world-view,
to people who are willing to help you grow powerful
in order to make the clan as a whole stronger.
On ET, a clan is essentially a politcal, social, cultural and economic organization.
The organization is based around the clan's world-view.
With respect to politics, members are supposed to make sure that their
mates are acting in harmony with the clan's ideology as
often outlined in a constitution. Failure to behave accordingly
may result in punishment. From less to more servere, punishments
include censure, fines, loss of speaking priviledges,
exile, imprisonment, and being made an outcast.
Politically and socially, a clan is composed of a hierarchy,
usually with ten ranks. One usually defers to those of a highest ranks,
who are much more powerful, and who can punish swiftly.
